Transfer Case Service and Repair

The more complicated a vehicle is the more parts and components there are making everything work. And that means more things that need to be maintained to optimize performance and reduce the chances of a failure. Of course, if you're talking about something like one of those fancy head-up displays, it's not going to be the end of the world if it stops working. But if you've got a vehicle with four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive there are some parts specific to that type of vehicle that have to be kept in the very best order for the vehicle to run as it should. One of those components is the transfer case, which you may or may not be aware of, but it really is fundamental to the operation of any four or all-wheel drive vehicle. So, here's what it is, what it does, and why you need to have it professionally maintained.
What is a transfer case?
Basically, a transfer case is a very specialized component of four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems that's essential for any vehicle to use both front and rear axles to drive. To put it in the simplest of terms, a transfer case splits the engine power and sends it to all four wheels using the front and rear axles. The transfer case can be found right at the centre of the drivetrain system on all-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles. If it's a serious off-road vehicle the transfer case will contain one or more sets of lower gears to handle the challenges of the most demanding terrains. Transfer cases therefore vary in complexity, with full-time four-wheel drive vehicles having the simplest types, while part-time 4x4 or the latest active four-wheel drive systems will have considerably more complex systems so the vehicle can run in a number of different drive modes.

Transfer case maintenance

Maintaining a transfer case isn't a long or too involved process as it mainly comprises of checking the transfer case fluid to make sure there's enough in there, or changing it at specified intervals. Transfer case fluid removes heat and lubricates the internal parts to keep the gears cool and turning smoothly. Of course, like engine oil, transfer case fluid becomes contaminated over time through a build-up of carbon while cooling hot components. Metal particles caused through the wear and tear of internal components are also carried in the fluid so they can be removed from the system to avoid damage by having the fluid changed. Generally speaking, it's recommended you should get your transfer case fluid changed around every 48,000 km, especially if you use your four-wheel drive system regularly.

Benefits of a transfer case service

While checking the fluid level is an easy job most of us can manage ourselves, a proper service carried out by trained professionals is the best way of keeping your transfer case and four-wheel drive system working as it should for the long term. A trained technician servicing your transfer case on a regular basis can prolong its life, reduce the potential for a breakdown, protect your vehicle's transmission, protect any warranty you may have, and perhaps most importantly, keep you and your passengers safe.
