Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - they're must-haves in today's tech-driven marketplace. Now, these sought-after features are coming to the Uconnect infotainment system, found in the 2019 Ram 1500.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
What are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto anyway? They're third-party apps that allow smartphone functions to run on a vehicle's infotainment display. You can use them to do everything your phone usually does (make calls, text, stream music, etc.), all without looking at that tiny little screen. Instead, everything is prominently displayed on your car's infotainment system. Plus, you can use your smart devices built-in navigation, which many people are more comfortable with.
For these systems to work, the vehicle's infotainment system must be designed to support them. And of course, you need an iPhone (5 and up) or an Android device. After that, the gadgets can be linked by doing the following:
- Apple smartphones plug directly into the car using a USB cable. Then, app icons from the phone's display are broadcast on the car's touchscreen.
- Android devices require a specific app be downloaded, then the device can be wirelessly synced to the car. Once connected, a list of activities currently in use will be displayed on the vehicle's touchscreen. A function menu is shown at the bottom.
There's been a lot of debate over whether Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is the better choice. Which is right for you depends entirely on the type of device you have - and whether you're either a dyed-in-the-wool Apple or Android fan.
